CHILL. Core values at Chuishank Juvenile Justice Center. For the last several months I’ve walked though many security doors and long grey hallways that echo each footstep to a detention unit fulled with tiny locked rooms, dedicated Probation officers, and classrooms. I’m greeted immediately, “Miss E!” and we get to work. It’s a full spectrum of emotions and each day is different…it’s moment to moment. Art is their safe space to express it all, and I’m grateful to be their guide.
Working with juvenile youth, we are designing six murals to be painted on the cement walls of their yard. Walls are so high they can only see the sky. So we’re bringing nature inspired visuals that represent the CHILL philosophy, to them. Thank you San Joaquin County for trusting creative expression as an important and healing outlet for youth.
